Cell Phones For Kids

Over a quarter of a million children are abducted each year in the United States and statistics show that well over a hundred of those children are serious injured, murdered or are never found.

A cell phone for a child can be a lifeline and even children as young as four or five can be shown how to use a simple cell phone.

There are companies that are making cell phones specifically for small children - they look like toys, but it's up to the parent to impress on the child that it isn't a toy and show him how to use it properly. Important numbers including 911 can be pre-programmed.

Small children obviously don't need a cell phone to talk to their friends, although when they get a little bit older they are going to want to use it for that, so a pre-paid cell phone is the way to go. Some of the plans for kids' cell phones are very affordable - less than $10 a month and they include access to a GPS phone locator.

All the parent has to do is pre-program the phone to send an email at specific times of the day. The parent then uses his computer or mobile phone to actually "see" where the phone is. Very useful if the phone is mislaid but even more useful when the child is late or doesn't come home.

Parental controls can be added as the child gets older. Again all the parent has to do is pull up the phone's record on a computer. The phone's usage can be monitored online and emails, texts and web sites the kid has visited can be viewed. Any risky behavior can be terminated instantly by blocking certain sites, email addresses or numbers.

Many children that are reported missing have simply wandered off with their friends, but that can still be a very anxious time for parents and can use up a lot of law enforcement's resources. Nearly half of the children that go missing are eventually found to be with family members, an estranged father or mother has taken them. For $10 a month if a kid carries a cell phone many of these cases could be solved much quicker.

Of course as the child gets older he will want a more sophisticated phone but it doesn't mean he will be in less danger. Recycle his old phone properly or give it to another parent of a small child, but when you buy your kid's next cell phone, leave the GPS tracking program on it.
